The city of Memphis was founded on May 22, 1819, by John Overton, James Winchester, and Andrew Jackson, who would later become the President of the United States. They named the city after the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile River, which was known for its grandeur and monumental architecture.
Throughout the 19th century, Memphis developed as a major trading center for cotton, which was cultivated at the region’s large plantations and heavily reliant on the labor of enslaved African Americans.
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated here and is also renowned for its cultural contributions, particularly in music. It has been home to many notable blues musicians, including Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Isaac Hayes, and Elvis Presley.
